Find more about gir national park

Sasan Gir National Park, once a hunting ground for the British during their rule in India, witnessed approximately 20 lions in 1913. However, the Indian Government, recognizing the need for conservation, imposed a hunting ban in 1960. Designated as a wildlife sanctuary on September 18, 1965, the expansive Sasan Gir aimed to protect the Asiatic Lion.

Since then, the Gir National Park has transformed into Asia's most safeguarded wildlife sanctuary. Lions, once hunted for pride, are now under 24x7 surveillance, accessible only through Gir Jungle Safaris. The concerted efforts of the Forest Department have led to a remarkable increase in the lion population, reaching a respectable count of 523 majestic animals.

The park's evolution reflects a commitment to preserving biodiversity and marks a triumph in conservation. From a history of exploitation to becoming a symbol of successful wildlife protection, Sasan Gir stands as a testament to the dedication required in safeguarding endangered species, securing a future for the Asiatic Lion in its natural habitat.
